He then went on to say this was necessary to keep us busy so we don't kill each other. Anyway, your post reminded me of this because having a staunch focus on the fundamentals of anything is becoming increasingly more specialized and confusing. Within one realm understanding the fundamentals of a respective discipline can lead to the kind of liberation that you mentioned, but under some circumstances it can lead to a degree of specialization that traps you, makes you comfortable, inhibits personal growth hence insuring you don't take chances and never have any "hits".
