The greatest enemy of the programmer: hemorrhoids

To quote an article:

“On Monday, 2 July, I woke up with a lump in my nether regions. This badboy was under my skin. Of course, I didn’t become aware of it immediately. They start small.”

Nobody wants to talk about the hemorrhoids because it’s embarrassing, but it will be a lot more embarrassing when you’ve got a nurse putting her hand up your butt. So read this post now to understand how, if you work on your computer everyday and have done so for a few years, you are in danger of getting hemorrhoids. About half of the population has hemorrhoids by age 50.

We’re in a new age at the moment – it’s an age where a lot of people are spending a lot of time sitting in front of the computer. They work at the computer all day, and then they go home to once again play on the computer, again sitting down. This is putting pressure on your rectal veins, and at some point, they will get inflamed and they will swell.

To continue the story:

“I used the ointments. Lots of it. But nothing. Growth was now what can only be termed as exponential. I needed help.”

He went to the doctor because it got really bad, and it had to be operated out.

“Post pile removal surgery is not at all like a walk in the park. It’s more than a bummer. You bleed all over the show, your anus is now directly shouting in your brain’s ear and you can’t imagine what your first bowel movement is going to be like.”

Yes, there is pain. There is also the fact that a team of doctors were just operating on your anus. There are the medical slips and the explanations you have to give everyone about why you were in hospital.

Don’t you think you should take preventive measures now before it gets too late?

Understand what hemorrhoids are

Hemorrhoids are inflammation and swelling of blood vessels around the anus or lower rectum. They are caused by several things, including excessive straining when shitting as well as sitting on your ass all day long for years.

They will be felt as lumps around your anus, and if they get thrombosed and clotted, they will have a smooth black or purple surface, and feel like a growth coming from your anus. These are extremely painful and will require a doctors care.

How can you prevent this from happening to you?

If you’re a programmer who sits all day, and you don’t drink enough water or eat enough fibrous foods, you are at high risk of getting hemorrhoids. Really high risk. You can easily take the steps in preventing them happening with a few minor lifestyle changes.

The most important thing you should do is make sure that you have enough fiber in your diet. If you have too little fiber, this will cause you to be constantly constipated, and it will result in a lot of pressure on your anal veins. So with every meal, have some apples with peel, nuts, vegetables, bananas or whole grains. An apple a day will keep the proctologist away.

Get a good chair. You are spending most of your life sitting in a chair – do not be sitting on a crappy Ikea chair. Spend $500 and get a good chair, this is one of the most important investments you will make for your health. Your back will thank you, as will your bum.

Another thing you can do is to spend part of your day working in a standing position. This will keep you on your feet and ease the pressure on your butt. It’s also good for your posture and your general well-being.

Don’t read on the toilet and don’t strain on the toilet. That causes pressure. The toilet is a bad place for the hemorrhoid sufferer – when sitting on that ring, you’re putting a lot of pressure on your anus, encouraging further swelling of the affected vessels.

What you should do if you already have them

If you notice bright red blood in your stool or any of the other symptoms for hemorrhoids, there are steps you can take. First of all, increase to a  high fiber diet. Drink plenty of water and don’t sit as much. Get a lot of exercise and try to be more active.

The asian squat toilet seems to be pretty good for hemorrhoid according to wikipedia, so you may want to try that.

And of course, go see your doctor.

I’m not a programmer, but I’ve had this same problem from sitting at the computer all day, reading and writing. If you have a dog and you’re not squeamish, you should consider a remedy that worked for me. Take some peanut butter, spread it around the affected area, and then have your dog lick the peanut butter off. It worked very well for me.

No, he doesn’t mind. Some dogs don’t like peanut butter, though. Never use chocolate or chocolate based products and spreads. Chocolate is poisonous and toxic for dogs.

Chairs with mesh seats are great. Aeron chair by Herman Miller or there are knock offs that work just as well for around $500 if you don’t want to spend $1000. :)

Most Herman Miller chairs have good cushion support and have adjustable seat pans so you can get your bum seated just right.Retails prices are nuts so I’d recommend getting a used one. Check craigslist or look for a local used office furniture store.I picked up an Ambi at a local used furniture store for $130. It’s infinitely better than the wooden chair I was using previously.http://www.hermanmiller.com/Products/Ambi-Chairs

Steve, man… Before animal rights activists see your post, you better be prepared with a video with the licker-lickee roles reversed, just to be able to prove that you at least treat your dog at par with you.

As said in the post the indian type of squat in toilet is very good.More over I do yoga and meditation regulary I dont get any kind of problem. The main problem is we software professionals we are worried more about the external world than the internal one. so our importance goes only towards the external one when we start workin on internal world by controlling mind and body there wont be any problem.By the end we will be more clearer and our clarity of thoughts will also improve day by day …We should all take oath that after we go home we should not touch computers this will be really a good resolution…

I want to share some tips too, and succesfully reduced hemorrhoids:- if you have to go for number one, do it right away. Don’t wait or hold up- when the hemorrhoids are getting smaller, apply olive oil on the hemorrhoid to get it back inside, do this a few times a day- don’t push when you are doing number one, it will come by itself (except if you have waited to long)- take a walk outside for a minimal of half an hour a day- make sure that you don’t have to much stress in lifeEating enough fiber I can confirm: eating vegetables, fruit, whole weat bread and pasta is all good. Avoid white bread and ‘white’ pastas.

I am an avid fan eating fruit & yoghurt in the morning. Here is my morning diet that keeps me going:odd days:1 apple 2-4 strawberries 1 orange and/or grapes. whatever on sale + yoghurt and some grain breadeven days:1 ham or beef steak 2 eggs coffee/ half of full grain toast with jamI can swear by squat position in the washrooms. Some friends made fun of me, but lets see who is the winner after they turn 30 or 40 :) Some of them already had haemorrhoid removal operations. I take walks every 2 hours for 15-30min if I can have time for them too.Apples are insidious in similar way to a diet soft drinks, in way that they enrage your appetite. I suppose thats why they are good in the mornings.

Sorry but herman miller chair are absolute rubbish. My lovely chair has helped cause thrombosis in my leg. Its only quality is that it is so uncomfortable, I regularly have to get up and move around. Save the money and buy a proper orthopedic chair and get it professionally set up. Herman miller are just fashionable and overpriced.
